Archiland's design for the Samaranch Memorial was driven by the desire to create a green building that not only commemorates Mr. Samaranch but also embodies the Olympic spirit and the principles of sustainability. The design was inspired by the five Olympic rings, with the main building presenting two intersecting circles and the remaining three rings transformed into a sunken courtyard. The resulting "8" shape pays homage to the 2008 Beijing Olympic Games, while the "S" shape stands for "Samaranch". The overall form symbolizes infinity and eternity, reflecting the enduring legacy of the Olympics.
The Samaranch Memorial distinguishes itself through its unique design properties. The infinity-shaped building contains a ramping loop that creates a natural flow sequence of entrance, exhibition, roof gardens, and servicing functions. Sunken courtyards integrate additional sporting spaces, all of which celebrate both the legacy and the life of today using the highest level of smart energy design.
The realization of the Samaranch Memorial was a testament to the integration of technology and design. The design team focused on creating a theme park with multi-dimension experiences, putting much effort into the design of the landmark building and public spaces. The functional spaces were arranged according to the exhibition sequence, and the roof garden became a natural transition between the interior and external spaces. The result is a blend of traditional Chinese and Western styles, offering different space feelings at every step.
One of the major challenges faced by the design team was reducing energy consumption. To achieve this, the team decided to use as much natural light as possible. They calculated the position and intensity of sunlight entering the courtyard and indoor windows and performed simulation experiments on thermal load, glass surface orientation, and position to obtain the most economical and efficient solution. This approach resulted in energy savings of more than 84% and created a more suitable temperature and lighting environment.
The Samaranch Memorial, covering an area of 14 hectares with a building area of 17,800 square meters, is a testament to the power of design to commemorate and inspire. The building's multiple use functions and its low-carbon design are a good interpretation of smart sustainable design. The building is designed to grow with people and the environment, with supporting commercial buildings integrated into the landscape to protect the overall natural landscape and form a large and varied experience space.
The Samaranch Memorial's recognition with the Golden A' Design Award is a testament to the design team's commitment to creating a structure that not only commemorates an important figure in the Olympic movement but also embodies the principles of sustainability and smart design. This award is granted to marvelous, outstanding, and trendsetting creations that reflect the designer's prodigy and wisdom, embodying extraordinary excellence and significantly impacting the world with their desirable characteristics.
